Software Engineering builds the brains of Waymo's fully autonomous driving technology. Our software allows the Waymo Driver to perceive the world around it, make the right decision for every situation, and deliver people safely to their destinations. We think deeply and solve complex technical challenges in areas like robotics, perception, decision-making and deep learning, while collaborating with hardware and systems engineers. You have:


  • PhD/Masters candidate in Engineering or Physical Sciences or equivalent.
  • Experience designing, analyzing, modeling, prototyping and working with complex optical systems.
  • Ability to do data analysis in Python/Numpy/Pandas
  • Track record of innovation and solving challenging problems

    We prefer:

    • PhD candidate
    • Familiarity with lidar technology
    • Experience writing software in C++ or doing SQL queries
    • Experience using and programming laboratory instruments: oscilloscopes, electrical/optical instrumentation, etc.
    • Strong understanding of optical semiconductors (lasers, detectors)
    • Proven hands-on experience at power-user level in computational physics simulation (e.g. Comsol) or from-scratch analytical physics modeling (e.g. Matlab/Python/Mathematica) and a track record of working across multiple physics disciplines
    • Great communication and presentation skills
      The expected hourly rate for this full-time position is listed below.
